Harnessing responsible use of technology for social and economic development in Burkina Faso: supporting community-led cultural heritage data governance through digital/AI literacy

People Involved

Project Description

African cultural content is underrepresented online, which presents a particular opportunity and challenge for underserved communities with low digital literacy. Artificial intelligence (AI) and other digital technologies may benefit them, but may also enable misappropriation or misuse of data, undermining cultural heritage practitioners’ markets and misrepresenting their cultural heritage. The project will bring together experts across humanities and technical disciplines, working particularly with practitioners in visual and performance arts (music) and other stakeholders in Burkina Faso, to develop a capacity-building workshop, an online toolkit, research articles and policy briefs that have broader relevance in Africa. The project will highlight the need for rights-based approaches to digital engagement that support community access, ownership and control over their cultural heritage data. It aims to promote sustainable economic and social development by developing contextually relevant digital literacy educational tools using innovative educational approaches enabled by AI, and adapting its use to cultural heritage contexts.
