Project Description

Round 2 of the UK-Ukraine Partnership Grant (10K)

In 2023, as a part of the Strategic Plan, Mariupol State University articulated a priority for the transition to a Civic University model. This decision was grounded in the University's new role of preserving the identity of the Mariupol Community, maintaining links with associations of Mariupol residents worldwide, and sustaining the potential for the future restoration of de-occupied Mariupol.

As a university in exile, MSU faces the dual challenge of serving its displaced community while redefining its civic role. It is vital for MSU to understand the experience of communities from Mariupol displaced to the UK to contribute to these projects while fulfilling its ambassadorial role and civic responsibilities to the city in exile.

The University of Hull (UoH), with expertise in community-led research and participatory engagement, has become a vital partner in this journey to understanding the experience of Mariupol communities in the UK. In Stage-1 of this grant, three members of MSU academic staff travelled to Hull to cooperate with key UoH academics to study the feasibility of methodological approaches and methods for studying the experience of people from Mariupol currently living in the UK. This project develops from this work to engage Ukrainian communities in the Humber and Yorkshire to explore how universities can respond to and engage with community need.
