Project Description

Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games are a huge international industry and form of entertainment in the lives of millions of players in the United States, United Kingdom and the wider international context. Players interact in a virtual space, forming teams, coalitions and adversarial relationships. A distinctive feature of these games is the use of simulated violence as a facilitator of group cohesion. A cursory glance of the Gateway to Research website informs one that much scholarly work has been conducted into video games. However, much of this involves textual readings of individual games and the logistics of game architecture. Research has not considered into the role violence may play in nurturing collective and group identities among players. Furthermore the notion of violence has been completely neglected by scholars in terms of the mechanisms of group formation in virtual and in person contexts.

This interdisciplinary proposal is for a qualitative pilot project. In the first instance we will conduct tentative interviews (5 each) in London, Hull and Colorado. We will ask questions that probe these lines of thinking. These interviews will be conducted in accordance with ethical guidelines and approval from each individual institution.
