The interval is characterized by increasing intensity and diversity of human impact on the landscape. The pollen record reveals the patterns of reinvasion of tree taxa following the last glaciation and allows exploration of major ecosystem changes such as the elm decline. However, interpretation of the pollen signal is a developing field, with much still to be done before we can reconstruct past landscapes with confidence and get full value from the large body of data available for the region.
