Abstract
It is particulalry important that nurses understand the concept of stress because stress influences the health and welfare of both patients and health care providers. This chapter outlines what stress is; the physiological changes of stress; stress as a causative factor in disease; the role of illness and treatment in causing stress and approaches to helping patients minimize stress and its affects.
