Abstract
Transport is often considered a service that can easily be purchased and obtained without further complications. However, managing and purchasing transport is a complex process. A five step transport purchasing capability maturity model is proposed which should help shippers monitor and improve their transport purchasing and management processes. It holds that certain tools and senior management awareness and associated aspirations can drive changes from one level to the next allowing a shipper to rapidly progress towards full purchasing maturity. This paper bridges a gap in knowledge on the organisation, monitoring and improvement of the transport function through contributing a comprehensive model to develop this long overlooked but vital business function. The authors have found no similar methodology in the literature within this domain.
