Abstract

This chapter explores the history of developments in understanding abnormal behavior. It takes the view that, to be of any use to the understanding of human suffering, psychiatry, psychology, and psychopathology must be reconceptualized as hybrid disciplines. This reconceptualization dictates that the construction of these three disciplines be studied diachronically. The chapter discusses the contextualized and hermeneutic analysis of the events, protagonists, and conjunctures that have so far partaken in the construction and activities of the language of psychopathology. It summarizes work undertaken and published by the authors in the past forty years, and presents the etiological accounts of mental afflictions since the 17th century. The chapter then highlights some of the complexities involved in tracing the origins and changes in meanings that underlie the concepts under exploration. Finally, it draws attention to the necessary selective process that is inherent to the creation of a historical narrative.
