Hominids are the group of primates known as the great apes, which includes orangutans (Bornean, Pongo pygmaeus, and Sumatran, Pongo abelii), gorillas (Western gorilla, Gorilla gorilla, and Eastern gorilla, Gorilla beringei), chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), bonobos (Pan paniscus), and humans (Homo sapiens). The following chapter will address some of the most prominent cognitive abilities assessed among nonhuman hominids, addressing both physical and social cognition and where the two domains intersect. This will be followed by a discussion of how cognition is linked to behavior, particularly with regard to social behavior. The covariation between cognitive abilities and behavioral traits will then be addressed, considering indications that both share the same underlying mechanisms.
