Biography | I am a lecturer in Biological Sciences at the School of Environmental Sciences of the University of Hull. Currently leading the MSc Environmental Change, Management and Monitoring programme. My research focuses on spatial ecology in disturbed landscapes. My current research aims to provide new insights on how species adapt and modify their behaviour in response to drivers of environmental change to enable the development of long-term conservation strategies. In addition, I am interested in using GIS and RS applications to support and address the current biodiversity decline. I am actively involved in open data projects and I work with multidisciplinary groups by integrating ecology in innovative communities, such as consulting companies and science labs. I am member of the British Ecological Society and Connectivity Conservation Specialist Group for the IUCN. Before joining the University of Hull in 2022, I was a Researcher at the University of Azores (2021-22), a Research Assistant at the University of Hull Scarborough Campus (2013-2017) and Research Associate at the University of Porto (Centre for Geospatial Science) from 2011-2013). I was awarded a PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of Hull in 2018, a MSc in Ecology, Environmental and Territory (university of Porto) in 2011 and a BSc in Biology from the University of Porto (2009). |
Research Interests | Spatial ecology Animal movement Population ecology Biogeography Ecological modelling Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing |
Teaching and Learning | Applied ecology is a major aspect of my teaching. I teach a number of modules that use ecological case studies and different approaches in conservation. I encourage students to apply innovative thinking and independent work to solve pressing environmental issues by using GIS, RS and other statistical tools. I am currently the programme lead for MSc Environmental Change, Management and Monitoring and I teach (module leader or contributions) to the following modules: L7 - Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing (ML) L7 - Research skills in Environmental Management L7 - Environmental Impact Assessment L7 - Ecosystems Assessment L7 - MSc Dissertations (ML) I also contribute to several undergraduate modules in the school: L4 - Landscapes of the World L5 - Field studies (Geography) L5 - Field studies (Environmental Science) L6 - Field studies (Marine Science) |
PhD Supervision Availability | Yes |
PhD Topics | I am available to supervise postgraduate students interested in biogeography, ecological modelling and applications of geographic information systems and remote sensing applications in ecology. |
