Coastal and estuarine ecosystems worldwide are under pressure from population growth, environmental degradation and climate change impacts. In the United Kingdom (UK) and Brazil, coastal areas greatly contribute to the local and national economy by supporting key urban centres and industries (tourism, fisheries, ports). It is now widely known that a healthy natural environment is crucial to social welfare and the world’s economy. However, finding the balance between nature conservation and development needs is difficult, particularly in developing countries. Ecosystem-based management (EBM) has emerged as an integrated approach for the sustainable management of the trade-offs between socioeconomic development and nature conservation. EBM requires a transdisciplinary understanding of the natural system, nature-human interactions, and how they change through time. Academic research can help gaining this knowledge, which is crucial to inform policies and practical applications. Researchers from Brazil and the UK, including world’s experts in estuarine and coastal management will meet in Vitoria (Espirito Santo, Brazil) to discuss how they can collaborate to support the implementation of EBM. Through inclusive and participatory activities, the workshop will promote an in-depth discussion of how EBM can help reduce habitat loss, environmental degradation and depletion of natural resources; thus enabling social and economic development. Importantly, the Brazilian Climate Change Adaptation Plan, encourages the integration of EBM into planning to promote sustainability and resilience to climate change impacts, such as habitat and biodiversity loss, sea-level rise and more frequent extreme weather events. The workshop will stimulate the development of long-lasting UK-Brazil collaboration and government-research partnerships that combine the scientific and practical knowledge required to build the required research and technical capacity for EBM implementation.

Evidence based approach to effect of decommissioning on MPA conservation and ecosystem services Feb 1, 2017 - Jan 31, 2018
Building on existing frameworks, we will develop a Decision Steering Document (DSD) which contains a transparent, defendable and more streamlined procedure for identifying and assessing scientific evidence. The DSD will facilitate decision-making for...
