This project will develop the capacity of teachers working in underprivileged township schools in Johannesburg, to teach students how to read for the purpose of learning and understanding ‘threshold concepts’ those concepts that are core to a subject, in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) subjects. The learning of such concepts are currently hindered by language limitations within South Africa and are thus preventing matriculation in STEM subjects, leading to a deficit of qualified individuals who may contribute to both society and the economic progression of the country.
Teachers will be trained using an innovative methodology called ‘reading to learn’ whilst exploring scalability of this approach by using video observations. An identified stakeholder group will first trial the combination of methodology with technology and secondly collect data on the impact of this approach enabling the stakeholders to develop into a cohesive network which will enable a future full GCRF application.
