Antimicrobial materials have received much interest recently. The efficient inactivation of pathogenic bacteria on surfaces is one of the major challenges in the management of infection. Our project seeks to develop a cost effective and versatile polymer coating that uses visible light to disinfect surfaces. Recently we described a cheap and versatile prototype able to kill both gram positive and gram negative bacteria. We now wish to extend this technology to other polymers suitable for making self-sterilizing surface coatings. Advantages of this system are its broad spectrum of activity and an inability of bacteria to develop resistance.
