Global infrastructure public-private partnerships and the geopolitics of city-regions

People Involved

Project Description

In a context of global austerity and regulatory instability, city-regional authorities in many countries are turning to a new generation of global infrastructure public-private partnerships (GIP3s) in order to leverage private investment for major infrastructure projects (Jonas and Goetz, 2015). GIP3s involve consortia of international construction companies and investment firms, which raise capital from global equity and bond markets to cover extra costs associated with the delivery of projects, such as mass transit systems. The aim of the proposed research is to examine the context and circumstances in which public authorities across select city-regions look to GIP3s in order to sustain regional investments in infrastructure and the built environment.
