Valuing Nature Programme Placement Scheme

People Involved

Project Description

This placement forms the foundation for a cross-disciplinary relationship linking research at IECS, University of Hull, to on-the-ground MPA management with The Wash and North Norfolk Marine Partnership (WNNMP). The candidate is the WNNMP Project Manager.

Protocols will be established to map and identify the ecological, economic, societal and cultural values of MPA feature ecosystem services at a regional level within a national contextual framework. This is essential to demonstrate the system-wide improvements to communities that result from the conservation of the natural environment.

Through IECS training, the candidate will learn to use satellite derived data to map coastal features at high spatial resolution and to create maps and other visual tools that will support long-term engagement with stakeholders. Training will be provided to connect intertidal habitats to established national and regional data on ecosystem service provision. Accuracy of feature mapping will be enhanced through local ethnological data gathering workshops. This work will complement daily WNNMP activities, thus making efficient use of the part-time resource request for this placement.

This pilot study will focus on saltmarshes, building on local knowledge on natural hazard alleviation, contribution to health and well-being and capitalising on the engaged community of local saltmarsh users.
