QR-GCRF 20.21.PPF05 - Pilot testing of a low-cost pretreatment material for enhancing the biogas yield from the biodigestion of cassava waste
People Involved
Project Description
In this project, our vision is to test innovative and cheap solution for transforming the abundant cassava waste in rural parts of Nigeria into biogas as cheap, clean and sustainable cooking fuel. Ongoing research at MOUAU has identified a local and cheap material, namely “kanwa”, for pretreating cassava waste before biodigestion to improve biogas yield. The cassava waste blended with about 20% of animal dung produces 500-700 m3/tonne of the volatile solid. Initial tests at MOUAU shows that “kanwa” pretreatment will further increase the biogas yield by 50-80%. In this work, pilot-scale tests will be conducted for the biodigestion of cassava waste with “kanwa” pretreatment. Project impact will support inclusive access to clean energy, household wellbeing, environmental sustainability and food security. We will create awareness and promote this technology through community outreach for a cooking demonstration with biogas and train women on how to set up and operate the biodigesters.
