Project Description

We are planning to bring deprived communities together to organise fun, recreational and wellbeing workshops with activities such as cooking, music, and talking therapy. There are two objectives to our project namely 'Not Alone' and 'Social Wellbeing' services. The overall aim is to tackle social isolation, loneliness, inactivity, by offering emotional-wellbeing support to deprived families, lone parents, children and young people. Each of these are individually and collectively experiencing a range of mental health difficulties such as low mood, fear, fatigue, uncertainty, poor sleep, unhealthy eating, anxiety, stress and depression. We know that the effect of the pandemic has further compounded the problem of our target group. For instance, while some are worried about the COVID vaccine, some are anxious and depressed due to bereavement and other related crises. To tackle some of these problems and offer a seamless transitional experience, we are working in partnership with Community Forward to deliver this project. This project will go a long way to help people integrate, get more active and feel healthier. We plan to use a combination of engagement strategies including regular drop-in sessions, telephone conversations, wellbeing workshops, but most importantly involve beneficiaries in planning, key decision making, leading in delivery and evaluation of the project, such that it is fully co-created. By working with the researcher, Katie Parsons (University of Hull), participants will feel able to share their individual experiences, cultural differences and learn from each other. These experiences can be documented to promote sharing of knowledge and lead to future research innovation and co-development. We anticipate that the researcher will participate in our planning meetings, healthy workshops and in project experience documentation, allowing positive learning opportunities from the partnership.
