Primary productivity off the Yorkshire coast with reference to fisheries productivity and recent implications on the wider environment

People Involved

Project Description

A previous project indicated that primary production is low at offshore stations in the important Yorkshire crustacean fishery area.  Modelling showed that the water column is too deep and too well-mixed to support phytoplankton growth, partly as a result of very high light attenuation. These findings were based on remote sensing observations and will be supported by field measurements in the project. Primary production and the health of the phytoplankton at the base of the food chain will be measured. This will help understand recent changes in the inshore environment.
