Project Description

Our plan is to establish a Multi-Disciplinary Clinic (MDC) within the Faculty of Health Sciences that will combine and exploit our professional expertise in Health, Sport and Exercise Science, Nutrition & Dietetics, Physiotherapy, Psychology and Mental Health. It will serve as an income-generating platform for participating departments, the Faculty and University. The first phase of MDC development (12-months), for which we are seeking HEIF support, will establish a Sports Rehabilitation Clinic focused on the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of neuro-musculoskeletal injuries. Market research shows there is strong demand for Sport Rehabilitation programmes and we recognise that we are missing income opportunities aligned with our expertise in this area. There is good local demand for sport rehabilitation services among University staff, students, sports clubs and the public. Previously, a smaller-scale sport rehabilitation service within SHES (2008-2019) provided clear evidence of the market/income generating potential. During the first year, in addition to starting to provide sport rehabilitation services, we will focus on building the brand and undertaking additional market research. We will explore the potential to expand this delivery model into a range of other services, including a Physiological Assessment Service, a Sports Asthma/Unexplained Exertional Breathlessness Screening Service for recreational athletes, and with the support of Nutrition & Dietetics, Physiotherapy, Psychology and Mental Health, the option for delivering corporate Health & Wellbeing Services for university staff and other organisations. The MDC will provide opportunities that will enhance the student experience via placement opportunities, dissertations and PhD research, and will improve graduate employability.
