Project Description
Offshore Wind Farms (OWF) are central to UK governments goals of clean growth and environment and climate change management. However, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, accounting for 25%-30% of lifetime OWF costs, increase the Levelized Cost of Electricity. With environmental, i.e. seastate, or logistical constraints prohibiting operations and maintenance profit may be directly lost for indefinite periods of time. SmartWave builds on the Local Seastate for Stop Go Operations (LoSSGO), a Greenport Hull project with OREC and Orsted, to enable improved OWF logistics. SmartWave will advance remote sensing methodology developed under LoSSGO, sole IP UoH. This remote sensing methodology to evaluate sea state has the potential to be applied globally, providing cheap and accurate sea state forecasts to an international market, with end-users including offshore wind farm operators, crew transfer vehicle and maintenance companies, etc.
SmartWave HEIF proposal will develop a trademarked online tool to transform the remote monitoring and assessment methodology in a marketable product. Working with Aura, the Offshore Wind Library and the EEI-lead AuraCDT, as well as building on current engagement with Orsted, the project will engage with relevant sector users to consult on what type of information and at what intervals is most important to them, as well as which is the most useful way of establishing and delivering the appropriate sea state evaluation information to them.
