HEIF: Rising Tide in the Humber: An online toolkit for teaching flood and climate histories in schools

People Involved

Project Description

This project uses the past to raise awareness about present-day flooding by highlighting the environmental, social, and cultural impact of a major flood of Hull in 1646. It will create an online toolkit – a website, dynamic map, and 360 VR film – designed to enhance existing resources from two previously-funded Rising tide projects led by PI Mottram, a UoH HEIF project (2019), which pump-primed an AHRC/XR Stories collaborative grant (2019-20). The toolkit created will support schools teaching climate histories (compulsory at KS3), while also serving as proof-of-concept for a £300k AHRC bid to be submitted September 2022. The AHRC/XR Stories project combined interdisciplinary and industry expertise to recreate the 1646 flood and teach flood risk and resilience through a flood game designed for use in schools on stand-alone laptops with VR headsets. However, Covid-19 restrictions on school visits prompted us to produce an alternative, online 3-minute 360 VR film, which has since featured at Freedom Festival, Waterline (2020), ClimateExpo (2021), and as part of the UoH Strategy 2030 and Oh Yes! Net Zero launches (2022). Building on the success of the VR film, the proposed project will: a) enhance the existing film by housing it on a dedicated new website alongside supplementary learning resources, b) develop two new digital resources for this website, a dynamic map and 360 VR film charting time-lapsed progression of the 1646 flood across the ‘rising tide’, c) organize an on-campus CPD event for school teachers to promote the value of our website as a learning resource.
