Project Description

Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 women worldwide, the same frequency as diabetes but it has had a tiny amount of research funding in comparison. Endometriosis causes debilitating pain that can lead to loss of work, impact mental health and is a major cause of infertility. Currently the only way to diagnose endometriosis is through laparoscopy which is invasive and requires a general anaesthetic. Most women with endometriosis wait 7.5 years on average for a formal diagnosis.

At the University of Hull we have been working to develop a urine test for endometriosis. This would help diagnose women with endometriosis without the need for an invasive test, and ensure women with endometriosis are identified early in their disease and sent to the right place for treatment. In order to do as many tests as we want to, on urine from women with and without endometriosis, and to see what affects the results (like stage of disease and time of day), we are performing tests very similar to the lateral flow tests used to detect covid.
