Endometriosis and bleeding disorders: detection of endometriosis and identification of new treatment strategies

People Involved

Project Description

Endometriosis is a chronic, debilitating gynaecological disease that affects 1 in 10 women worldwide. In the UK the average wait for a diagnosis of endometriosis is 8 years which has not improved in over a decade. Due to the lack of an accurate non-invasive diagnostic test (6), where possible patients are encouraged to opt for a clinical diagnosis and empirical medical treatment. For patients with bleeding disorders, including von Willebrand disease (VWD) which affects 1% of the population, a diagnosis of endometriosis presents with it’s own problems as the balance of risk and benefit may be significantly different. Our non-invasive test for endometriosis, EndoTect, has the potential to reduce wait times and help patients, including those with bleeding disorders, get the correct treatment for their endometriosis sooner.
