Formative conditions of plane bed and antidune in turbidity currents
People Involved
Project Description
This study aims to compare the formative conditions of upper-plane bed and antidunes between in open-channel flows and turbidity currents. There are the quantitative boundaries between these two types of bedforms, so we can quantitatively compare the formative conditions of these bedforms.
Like rivers on land, turbidity currents which occur in deep seas carry a vast amount of sediments and create sandstone beds called turbidite. The hydraulic conditions of flows which deposit strata can be estimated from the sedimentary structures in the beds. The sedimentary structures are associated with the bedforms. Therefore, the formative conditions of bedforms are significant to estimate the hydraulic conditions of turbidity currents from turbidites.
Bedform phase diagrams have been proposed based on laboratory and field observations for unidirectional open-channel flows. However, there are physical differences between unidirectional open-channel flows and turbidity currents. The physical differences may result in the differences of formative conditions of bedforms. Thus, it is required to propose a bedform phase diagram for turbidity currents.
