Abstract
This chapter looks at some of the challenges presented to colleges with higher education provision when seeking to enhance their research and scholarship. The chapter explains the context for the role of colleges in providing higher education courses, and explains why research and scholarship can be problematic, both conceptually and practically. The conceptual underpinning for the chapter is the work on the four scholarships by Ernest Boyer. This chapter focuses on how successful step change requires college-wide commitments, and how this might be facilitated through targeted initiatives and appropriate leadership. Examples from particular college contexts are discussed. The broad context for the chapter is a national project, funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, focused on enhancing scholarship in English further education colleges.
