Le mystère des portraits de Robespierre aux rayures

Abstract

The portrait of Robespierre in a striped coat (Musée Carnavalet P.729) is probably his most popular and most reproduced portrait in modern times. However, in researching his iconography, I was surprised to find it was not in circulation during his lifetime, but appeared for the first time in the 1820s. Can its possible origins be identified?
