This application is to complete the post-excavation analysis for this site, particularly specialist reporting of oyster shells and other molluscs and 450 previously unidentified Roman coins, for the final publication. The coins, plus those already identified, make this, at c. 1000 coins, one of the largest non-hoard assemblages in the wider region.
This site, close to the Humber, near Elloughton, East Yorkshire, excavated in 2014 and 2015, has proved to be highly significant for both the Roman and Anglo Saxon periods. The foundations of a stone building 18x7m with an apsidal end were partially excavated. Large amounts of polychrome tesserae and painted wall plaster showed it to have been a building of substance. Other features revealed by magnetometer survey included enclosures containing buildings associated with a branch road connected to a main East-West road from Brough (Petuaria) which ran towards the River Humber. Legio VI Victrix engraved and stamped tiles and over 50 Roman brooches have also been found there. One of the earliest Iron Age square barrows in the region was excavated on the site as were a number of mid to late Anglo-Saxon burials within chests.
