Project Description
Changes to emission limits, made under the Large Combustion Plant Directive, gave power generation companies the option to ‘opt in’ and install pollution abatement technology or ’opt out’ and close power plants which did not comply with the new emission limits. As a result of this change, the Tilbury B power station site in Essex was closed down in 2013 and is in the process of being decommissioned with an expected completion date in late 2018.
RWE Generation UK plc is now progressing with the consenting of an ‘Energy Centre’ at the Tilbury site (Tilbury Energy Centre, TEC), comprising: up to 2500 MW gas fired Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power station; up to 299 MW Open Cycle Gas Turbine (OCGT) up to 100 MW of battery/storage grid facilities.
Two pipeline routes are being proposed for gas delivery, both of which are land-based, running adjacent to the Thames estuary (see tlc0169ap1.pdf, provided by RWE). RWE is required to submit an Environmental Statement (ES) as part of the application for development consent.
This project will provide a description of the current environmental status of the tidal Thames and will form the Environmental Baseline chapter of the ES document. The project is to carry out a search of published and grey literature focussing on the above topics, for the tidal Thames. To produce a full environmental baseline chapter to feed directly into the Environmental Statement. And to participate in meetings with RWE, either face-to-face (Swindon or Hull) or by teleconference.
