South Africa is the most unequal country in the world (Gini Index, 2019; Palma Ratio, 2019; World Bank, 2019), operating in great complexity resulting from an apartheid legacy. Such inequality, and the resulting poverty and disadvantage cannot be addressed by only working with those who are disadvataged. Rather all those living in South Africa, no matter whether rich or poor, need to work together to address those issues which keep South Africa bottom in the world rankings. This is the premise that underpins the government’s Transformation Agenda (South African National Development Plan 2030) which states that inequality can only be tackled by building partnerships throughout all of society.
One such inequality issue is education, where national attainment in maths and science education is ranked last out of 148 countries. This project seeks to understand the part multiple actors play in diminshing education inequalities through Community Engagement Projects, by bringing together multiple stakeholder groups across society. In addition, the project will idenitify the most effective way to address such inequality for the benefit of all, therefore being truly transformational and benefitting society as a whole and in a sustainable manner.
