Project Description
Flood-affected householders often struggle to access affordable, resiliency-focussed recovery. Support is highly variable and many experience loss of trust in the authorities and insurance during these events. This project will investigate how the system is failing flood victims and recommend improvements. We propose a research partnership between Aviva and the Flood Innovation Centre within the Energy and Environment Institute (EEI) at the University of Hull. The research partnership will focus on processes in the immediate aftermath of flood events (c1 day to c6 weeks) in the Humber which, outside London, is the UK region most vulnerable to flooding. The partnership will map knowledge and communication gaps and develop a practical framework enabling resources for building back better to be applied effectively after major flood events.
As well as mapping gaps in provision of post-flood support, the research partnership will collate and analyse metrics used to determine which resiliency measures are most effective. From this, a place-based ‘toolkit’ will be developed for overcoming the most persistent obstacles to post-flood recovery and informing the insurance sector about which measures are most effective at optimising value in flood repair. We will pilot the protocol in the Humber: a highly flood-prone area which has experienced repeated flooding. The resulting improvement framework will be applicable nationally.
