Project Description

One of the special functions of NatureScot is the establishment of monitoring protocols for statutory sites designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) and areas designated as part of the Natura 2000 series, (Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and Special Protection Areas (SPAs) under the EU Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC) and EU Birds Directive (79/409/EEC), together with Ramsar sites designated under the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance.

To manage the fish stocks in designated sites against a set of conservation objectives requires a monitoring programme that will establish the status of the species against a predetermined set of conservation objectives: a process known as condition assessment in the UK. Condition assessment is carried out at individual sites and can contribute to an assessment of the conservation status of each species across its geographical range in the UK. Site Condition Monitoring is carried out in a rolling six-year cycle.
