Project Description
One of the major problems encountered at Environment Agency and Internal Drainage Board (IDB) pumping stations is the entrainment of fish and eels during pump operation. The extent of the problem and the proportion of fish and eels that are damaged or killed by different types of pumps is largely unknown. Large silver eels are especially vulnerable as they attempt to exit freshwater systems on their spawning migration to the Sargasso Sea. The overall strategic objective for this project is to evaluate the impact of different types of pumping stations and investigate eel behaviour to assess and develop solutions to minimise fish and eel entrainment at Environment Agency and IDB pumping stations without compromising pumping efficiency.
This project will use new technology with a combination of acoustic telemetry, sonar imaging, and mark-recapture techniques to investigate eel migration, behaviour and entrainment at Environment Agency and IDB pumping stations. Understanding fish and eel behaviour in pumped systems will lead to improved guidance on solutions for implementation of eel legislation and to minimise impact of pumping stations on eel and fish populations.
