NERC Discipline Hopping: Event Measure Software for Benthic Stereo Video Analysis: Applications in marine ecology, conservation and knowledge exchange
People Involved
Project Description
Fish length data are commonly used to monitor the health of wild populations, examine ecological processes and facilitate the early detection of impacts from environmental hazards and change. Stereo-video provides a non-invasive, accurate and efficient method for quantifying the abundance and size of fish and other underwater organisms, but is vastly under-utilised. We recently collected >540 hours of underwater video footage from two sites in Scotland. This dataset is part of ongoing scientific research to answer key ecological questions, public engagement and knowledge exchange with coastal communities and data sharing with marine conservation decision makers. This activity will harness digital technology to advance our understanding of a healthy marine environment, allowing us to incorporate crucial length measurements into our existing analysis and thus enabling the production of a high quality scientific publication submission. By accessing new software we will: 1) Further our analysis of our existing underwater dataset, using EventMeasure to provide accurate length measurements for priority conservation species; 2) complete our manuscript draft and submit to a high impact journal; and 3) share our analysis with the local communities and policy makers with whom we are continuing to engage as part of our wider research.
