Understanding cardiac failure in patients with chronic kidney disease

As previously shown Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients have additional cardiovascular risk associated with increased mortality. Uraemic Cardiomyopathy (UCM) a frequent finding in CKD contributes to the poor clinical outcomes. Prof Bhandair and colleagues hypothesised that mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress in our animal model would impair cardiac bioenergetics and may contribute to the increased susceptibility to damage in UCM.

The aim of this additional work is to carry on with these initial findings as below
1) To further characterize the changes in cardiac tissue in vivo and carry measurements of mitochondrial membrane potential in vitro and in vivo using PET scanning
2) To probe into skeletal mitochondrial function by seahorse analysis and skeletal mitochondrial ultrastructure by electron microscopy
3) To stain for iron in the kidney to further characterize the nature of the iron deposition in the remnant kidney following iron therapy
