Abstract

Professional associations and learned societies are valuable resources, offering third space practitioners networking, connection, support, and scholarly opportunities. External pressures, however, often limit the time available for professional scholarship, or even actively work against it due to the context of marketized higher education. However, it does not have to be this way.

This chapter is a rallying cry for participation, encouraging practitioners to get involved in their broader scholarly community. Reflecting on what active engagement with my community taught me about driving professional scholarship, this chapter concludes with key actions readers can take to build their scholarly role and engage in career development. Given the constraints of our daily roles, I pitch participation as a transformative practice and reflect on how it has not only helped me connect with my community but also driven it forward through scholarship.
