Abstract
With the rapid development of technology in the digital age, the wave of using technology in music education seems unstoppable. Although technology is often encouraged to enhance and improve the effectiveness of music education, the factors influencing the use of technology in music practice remain unclear. China represents an ideal focus of study, following the implementation of its ‘Internet +’ policy: this thesis takes the opportunity to explore the perceptions of Chinese music teachers regarding the use of technology.
A mixed-methods approach was used to obtain data for this thesis. First, a quantitative study explored the relationship between teachers' music Technological Competence, Technology Acceptance, and Technological Behaviour by combining two theoretical models, UTAUT and TPACK. This study identified 307 valid questionnaires from music teachers in Fujian Province of China and used SEM methods to analyse the data. The results showed that music teachers’ Technology Acceptance could directly influence their Technological Behaviour in using ‘Internet + Music’ technology. However, teachers' Technological Competence tended to influence their Technological Behaviour by affecting their Technology Acceptance. Second, a qualitative study collected interview data from 20 music teachers in HEIs and used reflexive thematic analysis to explore their perceptions of using technology and its impact of technology on them. The interview data complemented the results of the quantitative phase by reinterpreting how different factors influence music teachers' use of technology and what technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge they should have. The five main themes that emerged from the interview data also revealed music teachers' perceptions and expectations of using technology, the advantages and disadvantages of using 'Internet + Music’ technology, and the impact of technology on the Chinese music education sector.
Therefore, this study examines the experiences of teachers in a non-Western country using technology in music education by developing and testing a new theoretical framework. The study shows how Chinese music teachers' technological behaviours are shaped by the economic, social, and cultural context of China, provides the current landscape of using technologies in China, and offers inspiration and suggestions for relevant stakeholders to use technology in Chinese music education.
