Beyond the Coast 2018: JNCC's Conference on the future of the offshore
2018 - 2018

Description 2018 marks the 10-year anniversary of the first MPA designated in UK offshore waters. To mark this milestone, JNCC are launching ‘Beyond the Coast’, a conference specifically focussed on progressive marine conservation in the UK’s offshore marine environment.

This event will bring together a diverse range of practitioners, academics and others to discuss key overarching themes, such as how to deal with uncertainty, assessing the health of the marine environment beyond the coast, and working together to achieve common goals. Q&A panels and breakout sessions will enable lively debate and interaction, with the aim of setting the ground for future collaborations and networking.

The objectives of Beyond the Coast 2018 are to:

Enable a review of the UK’s offshore marine environment in 2018, providing the opportunity for multi-disciplinary discussion around topical offshore issues;
Provide a platform for identification of opportunities for collaborative working to address challenges in our knowledge base and management of offshore areas;
Facilitate effective networking and relationship building for stakeholders working in the UK offshore environment.

Chemical Engineering Day UK 2014
2014 - 2014

Description This conference brought together researchers, engineers and scientists from around the UK to explore the latest technological advances and research results in core areas of chemical engineering. Through a combination of a distinguished plenary speaker, parallel technical sessions with invited talks by leading experts from academia and industry, and interactive poster sessions, participants showcased their research efforts and technologies, and share visions with researchers in the UK. New opportunities for collaborative effort will be created and, in particular, industrialists will be able to establish new dialogues and build relationships with universities in addition to developing links across industries.
Aims of the conference were: to strengthen the interactions within the UK chemical engineering academic community, in particular, to enhance communication among researchers and practitioners from the UK working in the area of chemical engineering and to create a dynamic environment for presenting, transferring, and exchanging the know-how and latest advanced research highlights and scientific achievements in chemical engineering and at the same time to stimulate the creative professional activity of young engineers and scientists.

CO2 Integration in High Temperature Steam Gasification (HTSG) of Solid Fuels (lignocellulosic biomass) and Blends with Waste (Plastic)
2016 - 2016

Description CO2 integration in high temperature steam gasification (HTSG) of solid fuels and blends with waste
Skoulou, V.* , Kantarelis, E., Yang, W.

Aim of the present work is to investigate the viability of modifying the high temperature steam gasification process by adding CO2 in an attempt to tailor value added gas suitable for the energy - chemicals production industry. Such an integrated process investigates the concepts of high temperature steam gasification (HTSG) with aspects from steam gasification under a rich in CO2 atmosphere(CO2HTSG). The present study aimed at investigating the beneficial or detrimental effect of modifying the existing HTSG atmosphere by partially recycling CO2 in lab scale and ideally emerging from a conventional CO2 production process. The effect of the process parameters on the producer gas quality, char and tar yields when gasified non-food woody biomass (WB) of forest origin, swedish coal (SC) and pre-treated plastic waste (PW) studied, as well as their weak blends. Results of the present study indicated synergies when materials of lignocellulosic origin with coal are co-gasified under high temperature/steam conditions, while the modified with CO2 steam gasification environment and at elevated temperature did affect also the quality of the producer gas. This effect depends on the feeding properties and steam gasification conditions, It seems that gasification at elevated temperature with steam-carbon-dioxide decreased the reactivity of chars however blending with biomass at low percentages maximized the H2 and CO2 production.
