This study asks: what role does criminal victimisation play in shaping identity? To answer this question it will depart from the conventional victimological focus on the crime event and instead utilise the narrative methods of desistance research combined with the strengths-based ethos of appreciative inquiry to ask the victims of interpersonal violence how they, and others, shape the process by which a victim identity is formed. This requires a sensitive exploration of how victimisation shapes self-identity and life opportunities. The aim of this study is to pilot a new research paradigm that will support a longer term research programme for investigating victim identities. The objectives of this study are to develop and test a new methodology for victim and trauma studies and provide some initial findings about the dynamics of victim recovery, resilience and transformation. Both the methodology and the results will be widely disseminated through academic and policy channels with the ultimate aim of developing a stronger empirical basis for improving victim policy and services.
