Understanding Community Insights into the Impact of GRIP hotspot policing

People Involved

Project Description

Humberside is uniquely positioned to undertake this evaluation which will contribute to the national understanding of the vital relationship between police and the communities they serve. As the highest performing police force in the UK, Humberside Police have an excellent partnership with the University of Hull who have a strong track record of research around violence reduction and vulnerability. Professor Simon Green and Dr Nicola O’Leary lead the Humberside VRU evaluation, and Professor Iain Brennan is Co-Investigator of the national evaluation of VRUs. The Humberside Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner is similarly integrated into this partnership, leading the delivery of the VRU and working in collaboration with the University on a number of other related initiatives across the region.

Humberside’s demographics and economic geography (predominantly white, high levels of deprivation, feelings of isolation, smaller urban centres) provides a unique point of comparison with larger, denser urban conurbations with very different demographics, where hotspot policing has most often been deployed. This facilitates an important comparison of trust and confidence in policing.

Our evaluation approach will deliver a systematic and comprehensive evaluation that engages the different experiences of seldom heard communities. This will allow the research team at the University to look at the whole – and the sum of its parts – to understand where the most significant experiences of GRIP exist.
