Returning Lamprey To The River Trent

People Involved

Mr Graham Sellers

Project Description

The Humber estuary is one of the most significant estuarine systems in the United Kingdom, providing a vital habitat for a wide range of aquatic species. Designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) under the European Union's Habitats Directive, the Humber estuary is recognised for its unique and important ecological value. Despite their ecological importance, populations of river and sea lamprey in the Humber estuary have declined in recent decades due to a range of anthropogenic pressures, including habitat destruction, pollution, and barriers to migration.

This project aims to map the available quality and quantity of habitat for spawning and juvenile river/sea lamprey in the Humber rivers. In addition the project will aim to improve upon current knowledge on the passage efficiency of lamprey at different barriers and through different fish passage solutions.
