This chapter considers how educators can develop principles of music production in a digital age. It focuses upon the practices used in the audio industry from both an analogue and digital perspective. Three renowned music producers were interviewed as part of this study. The evaluation of this data involved using interpretative phenomenological analysis and revealed the importance of capturing performance in the studio, the relevance of expertise from a musical and technical perspective, how the affordances of digital technology can affect workflow and decision-making, issues surrounding listening to music and loudness, and the impact of environment and commercial pressures. What is then put forward is a framework for considering designing tasks for students and the foundations for an in-depth environmental study.
