Abstract

The learning of a non-native language is considered to be “strategically vital” in the proposals for a NationalLanguage Strategy in the UK (ASCL, 2020). As part of the University of Hull’s Chinese Whispers project, this thesis investigated the development of a new resource for learning and teaching Mandarin language and culture to English school children and adults through singing. The first aim of the research was to provide a systematic evaluation of the design and delivery of a new teaching resource- “Mandarin Singing Curriculum”- via action research. The second aim was to reveal the lived experiences of being an intercultural teacher using autoethnography.
Following a critical review of existing research about teaching and learning, especially in the domains of music and language education, the findings of the empirical work are reported. Three models were produced in relation to the design of the Mandarin Singing Curriculum. First, a synthesis model was generated to provide a tailored framework for the curriculum development. Second, a content model was established to house the songs within the curriculum. It contained three components, each serving a unique purpose: core songs designed to facilitate vocabulary and language development; concert songs intended to foster linguistic and cultural understanding; and bespoke songs, crafted to meet the specific needs of teachers and pupils. Third, a delivery model was designed to offer a practical framework for implementing the curriculum in both educational and community settings. The model was goal-orientated,featuring weekly one-hour rehearsals that culminated in a concert performance. A range of existing and new teaching strategies and competencies were highlighted in the delivery of the Mandarin Singing Curriculum, including for integrated learning and online teaching.
The autoethnography unveiled both professional and personal developmental and transformative aspects about being an intercultural teacher with selected episodes contributing valuable insights into the challenges and rewards of intercultural teaching. Specific moments describing experiences about the language barrier, educational ethos, teacher-pupil relationships and culture shocks are discussed along withareas of guidance and support for intercultural educators so as to facilitate others in their journeys.
