Coast to Coast “Canada’s Survivalist Women” Literary Series
Beginning September 26, discover extraordinary Canadian authors, their unique perspectives and published works with the eighth annual Coast to Coast Literary Speaker Series at Queenston Chapel by the Laura Secord Homestead.
This year, four remarkable women authors share their courageous stories about overcoming dark and daunting elements of nature. From being “different” during a eugenics craze, fighting ancient monsters, escaping a murderer in the wilderness, to defying the mighty Niagara Falls, these women weave daring and dramatic stories that will be sure to keep you on the edge of your seat and cheering on protagonists as they risk everything to survive.
This year’s Coast to Coast Literary Series will be hosted inside the Queenston Chapel at Laura Secord Homestead, in Queenston, Ontario. With dates from September to December, each session includes light refreshments and hors d’oeuvres, with Niagara wines available for purchase by the glass prior to each event.
Tickets are $15 per event or $45 for the entire series (plus taxes and fees). This is a sold-out event.
The Authors

"Assessment and Feedback Literacy" - Assessment in HE network and Transforming Assessment - webinar "What's the point of assessment? Implementing university-wide student-focused competence-based assessment literacy."
The university of Hull is one of the UK’s first institutions to move away from learning outcomes and instead introduce an inclusive-education competence-based framework for all programmes from 2020-2023 (See competence-based HE [PDF] and inclusive education framework [PDF]). Included in the competence-based framework is an increased emphasis on formative assessment at programme and module level (Irons & Elkington, 2022), decolonising the curriculum (Nieminen, 2022) and removing bias through addressing the hidden curriculum (Joughin, 2010). In 2022 two staff, Andrew Holmes and Dom Henri were appointed as Senior Fellows of the Hull’s Teaching Excellence Academy, with a remit to operationalize (embed) assessment literacy processes and practices (Carless & Boud, 2018, Carless & Winstone, 2020, Malecka, Boud & Carless, 2020). This has involved designing and implementing competence-based assessment literacy and feedback literacy resources for staff and students, including: staff and student workshops, digitally badged student assessment literacy development online resources, an emerging programme-level assessment literacy ‘audit tool’, implementing increased use of formative and summative rubrics, the design and development of competence-based assessment rubrics (Jonssson, 2014) and curriculum design, aligning assessment with long-term learning (Boud & Falchikov, 20006) and providing staff support workshops we label as ‘assessment therapy’. Our presentation eports on progress to date, and the challenges we have overcome.
The Allam Lecture was held by the Hull York Medical School (HYMS) at the University of Hull in order to showcase research and studies in how HYMS students and Nursing and Midwifery colleagues are enhancing healthcare. I was asked to present my research on the impact and effectiveness a developed document 'Clinical Skills Passport' had for Undergraduate Nursing Students at the University of Hull when attending their Practice Placements. The conference was engaging and effective to highlight this research on a wider level with an opportunity to network with local and national colleagues.
